“Media and Identity” at the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication of NYU in 2019 examined the relationship between mediated forms of communications and the formation of identities, both individual and social. We explored how mediated forms of communication represent and form different social and cultural groupings, with a particular emphasis on gender, race, ethnicity, class and nationality. The cultural focus of the class was the United States. We visited the Stonewall National Monument and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in order to understand how media helps forming identity discourses in public spaces in New York City.
